Engraving is one of the last stages in production process, but from the visual point of view, this stage is one of the most important. Despite the technologies that allow to complete engraving much faster, our workshop performs engraving by hand, because an engraving performed by a master’s hand will undeniably possess unique characteristics and will have a more beautiful and lively three dimensional appearance.
Manual labour has always been a time consuming process, but it also has many advantages compared to other technologies. It is impossible to create graphic shading for a text or symbol engraved by a sand jet using a stencil; the depth of a letter engraved in this manner will appear different from an engraving made by master’s hand tool. Manually engraved letter can be outlined, and it also allows for a precise geometric shape in depth. Further, manual engraving permits to add precise shading to symbols and images using either dots or streaks.
Manual engraving is not subject to restrictions determined by software and technology, and the choice of fonts and drawings is limitless. When using different computerized engraving machines, the quality of the image is directly dependent on the quality of the engraving machine and the software used.
In the beginning of the stone treatment, the material is a large homogenous mass of stone. In order to proceed with the treatment, the material has to be divided into parts. In workshop environment, the stone can be split using iron wedges or cut with a saw.
Stone treatment is a time consuming process consisting of several stages that alters the appearance of the stone and its mechanic qualities. Polishing is the most common, but not the only method of stone treatment.
Water is used in stone treatment process. Therefore, all parts must be completely dry before they are glued. Gluing takes place in the workshop’s dry room, an area with low humidity level. If necessary, metal rods are incorporated in glued junctures to increase durability. Only high quality, multi-component adhesives suitable for our climate are used in this process. We can provide various on-site services, most often these services are related to reconstruction and restoration of the gravesite and an existing gravestone.
It is possible to engrave additional symbols and images on existing headstones. Although performing engraving at the workshop is much faster and more convenient, the cost of dismantling, transportation and installation may constitute a significant part of the total cost. Most often, engraving on existing gravestones is performed on-site.
